Founded in Paris in 1954 by the National Associations of France and Belgium, FIJET is the oldest association of professional travel writers and journalists in the world. With a membership that currently exceeds 900 members in over 35 countries on five continents, it is also one of the world's largest professional organization of travel journalists.

Over 30 affiliated National Associations represent FIJET in their respective countries and provide a professional base for the exchange of ideas and information. National Associations include groups in Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Luxembourg, Mexico, Morocco, Poland, Russia, Spain, Slovenia Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the USA.

Individual members from countries which include Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Finland, Iran, Latvia, Nigeria, San Marino,  Switzerland, and Uzbekistan also contribute to the strength of FIJET.

All members, are screened professionals actively engaged in journalism related to tourism as writers, editors, publishers, photographers and/or book authors for recognized print and broadcast media. As FIJET members, they are committed to objectivity in their work and to the promotion of world tourism.

FIJET is a non-profit, non-political organization which recognizes English, French, and Spanish as its three official languages. It's permanent objectives include: contributing to world peace and security by strengthening co-operation between nations through culture, education, and tourism; promoting the free exchange of ideas through International tourism; and exchanging ideas, training, education, and resources among international media and tourism professionals.

Each year, at its annual World Congress, FIJET promotes a particular aspect of world tourism. The Congress, which is held in a different country each year, highlights an area of significant international interest in travel and tourism. Past World Congresses have been held in Austria, Russia, Spain, Argentina, Crimea (Ukraine), Tunisia, Colombia, Turkey, USA, Egypt, Cuba, Croatia, Morocco, Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings are also conducted at regular intervals at destinations around the world. Executive Committee meetings in recent years were held in Istanbul, Moscow, Sharm El Sheikh, Prague, Morocco, Czech Republic, Spain, and Tunisia.

Although each National Association of FIJET operates independently, member associations share resources and invite other FIJET members to their activities.

FIJET communicates with its members as well as with tourist and business destinations, carriers, attractions, hoteliers, resorts, national and local tourism offices, and international organizations via two main methods:

"La Pomme d'Or" or "The Golden Apple" is the FIJET equivalent of the Oscar. This award for excellence is presented each year to an organization, country, city, or person in recognition of superior efforts in promoting and raising the level of tourism. The Golden Apple has gained significant recognition over the years and always has a list of prestigious candidates vying for it.

FIJET also encourages the development of journalists and journalistic standards through its Young Journalists Program and other meetings, seminars, and international gatherings.

FIJET currently maintains an International Center in Prague, Czech Republic where it collects and stores important written works of members. Over the years, its archives have become a valuable reference base for those engaged in travel research.

FIJET is an affiliated member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and cooperates with many other international associations such as UNESCO, FUAAV, etc.

FIJET is proud of the high position and respect it has achieved over the past fifty years in contributing to the mutual understanding among the people around the world. FIJET appeals to every responsible organization and to private, public and national authorities to support the realization of its aims in strengthening the community of mankind. The aims are:

  • Expansion of world tourism in an effort to bring people and nations together to promote world peace.
  • Defense of the right for all people to travel freely.
  • Maintaining and achieving a balance of ecology through the conservation of human, natural, cultural, and historical resources.
  • Preservation and popularization of those monuments which by their historical, architectural or cultural character form a common inheritance of mankind.
  • Dissemination of information about the history, habits, traditions and culture of all nations.
  • Development of new forms of tourism and new destinations in an effort to provide holiday experiences and recreation to all social and economic levels of people around the world.
  • Monitoring of member's behavior and editorial work via the international exchange of experience and information among world tourism organizations as well as FIJET members and associations.
