The Cağaloğlu Hamam was built in the early 18th century, by order of the Sultan. It is one of the few remaining, functioning, historical baths in Istanbul. It is somewhat unusual in that is a çifte (double) hamam, with separate men’s and women’s sections of equal size. Many hamams, due to space and cost restrictions, eliminated or downsized their women’s sections over time. There is also a garden and cafe located between the men’s and women’s sections, ideal for meeting up with friends or loved ones after your service is complete. The location of the hamam, in the centre of Istanbul’s historical Sultanahmet district, make it an ideal destination after a long day’s sightseeing or shopping.
The hamam tradition in Istanbul dates back to Roman times. Bathhouses were an essential part of the city’s make-up, providing a public service in times when indoor plumbing was reserved for the wealthy and water shortages were common. Aside from serving a hygienic purpose, hamams were also a social gathering place, where people could meet, relax, and socialize in an informal setting. These days, hamams are still a social place to relax, and the Cağaloğlu Hamam provides an unusual setting for bachelor parties, bridal showers, birthday parties, and other special events.
The Cağaloğlu Hamam has been filmed on numerous occasions. Travel series such as Pole to Pole with Michael Palin, and Rick Steves’ Europe, to name only a few, have all filmed in the baths. The hamam also features in scenes from such movies as Indiana Jones, and more recently, the television show the Bachelorette. In print, publications such as The Guardian newspaper, Newsweek, The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Geo Magazine, and Hurriyet newspaper have all published reviews of the hamam. Fashion and commercial shoots for Marie Clare, Vogue, Elle and W magazines have also been shot using the beautiful marble interior of the baths.
The Cağaloğlu Hamam offers a wide range of traditional services, starting from self-service all the way up to the luxurious Sultan’s service. The baths are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The men’s section is open from 8 am to 10 pm, and the women’s section is open from 8 am to 8 pm.
The Cağaloğlu Hamam is located on the same street as the Underground Cistern, approximately 250 metres from the Aya Sofia.
